Forms 9A and 9C are PDF documents, produced by Legal Accounting, that record the details of electronic transfers.  For more information on the Ontario 9A or 9C form and the compliance information requirements, please refer to the Law Society of Ontario’s website.

Enabling 9A and 9C

  1. Go to Admin > Firm > Settings > Provincial.
  2. Expand Ontario.
  3. Toggle on the required forms:
    • 9A for Electronic Trust-to-Operating Transfers
    • 9C for EFTs from Trust Out
NOTE:  Each form has customization options, which help to create a layout that is best suited to your firm. The options, Leave Blank, Responsible Fee Earner, Specific User, User Making Entry, can prefill areas on the Form with specific usernames in the system or, the name of the user making the entry at the computer screen.

  4. Click Save.
  5. Go to Admin > Firm > Settings > Features.
  6. Set the Trust transfers at the time of billing should be created as to EFT.
  7. Toggle on Create Printout.
  8. Click Save.

Generating the Forms

9A Form:

  1. Creating Trust transfers:
    1. Go to Add Entry > Transfer.
    2. Create a transfer entry from Trust to Operating account to pay an invoice, see Transferring Funds.
    3. Ensure to set the Type as EFT.
    4. Verify and change the Cheque Mgt:
      • Release/Print Cheque: This will take the money out of trust immediately and a PDF copy of the 9A form will be generated right away.
      • Release/Print Later (Batch cheque): This will move the money out of trust, but it will put the PDF copy of the 9A form in the Batch Cheque Print. The form will need to be released or printed to be generated.
      • Release/Never Print: This will move the money out of trust, but it will not create a PDF copy of the 9A form.

  2. Trust Transfer at the time of billing:
    1. Go to Billing > Review Charges (this is after you've requested the invoice, see Creating an Invoice or Bill).
    2. Apply the trust fund.
    3. Put a checkmark on the entry to select it.
    4. Set Action to Finalize.
    5. Click Process.

This will move the money out of trust, but it will put the PDF copy of the 9A form in the Batch Cheque Print. The form will need to be released or printed to be generated.

9C Form:

  1. Go to Add Entry >Trust Out.
  2. Set Type to Wire, EFT or eCheck/e-transfer.
  3. Verify and change the Cheque Mgt:
  • Release/Print Cheque: This will take the money out of trust immediately and a PDF copy of the 9C form will be generated right away.
  • Release/Print Later (Batch cheque): This will move the money out of trust, but it will put the PDF copy of the 9C form in the Batch Cheque Print. The form will need to be released or printed to be generated.
  • Release/Never Print: This will move the money out of trust, but it will not create a PDF copy of the 9C form.
