Finding the Right Report for Lawyer Billings, Collections, and WIP

Legal Accounting has several reports that show how much a lawyer billed, collected, or still has unbilled. This article helps you pick the right report and view for common lawyer-performance questions. Use it when you need to answer questions like how much a lawyer collected this year, how many hours a lawyer billed last month, or how a payment was applied, without exporting and rebuilding the numbers yourself.

Understanding Lawyer Roles on Reports

Reports can show amounts by three lawyer roles:

  • Responsible Lawyer: The lawyer accountable for the file.
  • Credit (Fee Credit) Lawyer: The working lawyer who did the work.
  • Collecting Lawyer: The lawyer responsible for the invoice when it was billed.

Note: Pick the same role on every report you compare. Credit and collecting summaries are two views of the same money, so don't add them together.

Choosing a Report and View

The table below shows which report and view to run for each question.

To see Go to View
Payments and how they were applied Reports > Receivables > Payment payment (Payment Allocation), or summaries for lawyer and area of practice totals
Value of time billed after adjustments Reports > Productivity > Realization billreal work lawyer
Hours entered (billable and other) Reports > Productivity > Lawyer time entered
Fee, disbursement, and tax split of A/R Reports > Receivables > Receivables billcosts
Invoices with invoice date and last receipt Reports > Receivables > Receivables by client, with Include fully paid invoices toggled to on
Unbilled fees for one lawyer Reports > Contact > Ledger wip detail, filtered by Working Lawyer
Dockets for one person Reports > Other > Time time, filtered by Fee Earner
Entries in a GL account, with payees Financials > General Ledger basic, or payee to show payees

Notes:
• WIP reports filter by responsible or working lawyer, not by credit lawyer.
• In the General Ledger parameters, you can select one GL account or all of them. You can't select several specific accounts or a range.
