Reversing a Trust Transfer that Paid an Invoice

If a trust transfer paid the wrong invoice, or you need to undo a payment from trust, you can delete the transfer or reverse it. Use this article when you deleted an invoice but its trust transfer won't delete, Delete is unavailable on a trust payment, the bank has already moved the money, or deleting an invoice created an operating retainer.

Deleting a Transfer That Paid an Invoice

To do this:

  1. Open the client ledger for the file.
  2. If the invoice shows REQ, it's in a draft bill. Undo the draft in Review Charges first.
  3. Click the trash can icon beside the invoice to delete it.
  4. Click the pen icon on the transfer.
  5. Click Delete.

Moving an Operating Retainer Back to Trust

If deleting the invoice moved the funds into an operating retainer, move them back to trust.

To do this:

  1. Go to Add Entry > Transfer.
  2. Move the amount from operating to trust for the same file.
  3. Leave Cheque Mgt unchanged.
  4. Click Save.

Reversing a Transfer You Can't Delete

Use this method when the transfer is reconciled, is in a closed period, or the bank has already moved the money.

To do this:

  1. Go to Add Entry > Operating In.
  2. Enter the amount as a negative.
  3. Select the file and the invoice the transfer paid. This puts the balance back on the invoice.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Go to Add Entry > Trust In.
  6. Enter the same amount as a positive.
  7. Click Save.

Note: These entries don't create a cheque. You don't need to print or deposit anything.
