Voiding a Cheque/Check

In Actionstep Legal Accounting, you can enter transactions to be printed as checks. These are grouped into batches and printed when you're ready. Sometimes, however, you may need to void a check — for example, if the transaction was a mistake, the check printed incorrectly, or the check was never cashed.

In Legal Accounting, printed checks are created by first creating a transaction. If you need to edit or delete a transaction later, you must first void the related check, as checks and transactions are handled separately. You can then alter the transaction.

Voiding a Check

To void a check:

  1. Go to Contacts > File Manager and choose a file.

  2. Select the Ledger tab and find the transaction.

  3. Click the Edit icon on the right-hand side.

  4. On the next screen, click Void (bottom left).

  5. Enter a date for the transaction to be voided, and a reason for voiding in the Memo section.

  6. Click OK.

Checks with Paid Disbursements

If a check needs to be voided but is already attached to a client disbursement, be sure to follow these steps:

  1. Void the check, following the instructions above.

  2. Reissue the check.

  3. Contact the bank to inform them of this. If the original, physical check was lost and and does reach the bank later, there will be a record of it being voided and reissued.
